Promises by Jennifer

What is in a promise, but words fashioned to convey intent?
It can only truly be received on faith.
Somehow contained in that intent is an expression
of reliance on the receiver by the sender,
that the issuer of these words
has it in his or her own best interest
to strive to fulfill the other's expectations,
so set by the former party.

And in a broken promise is the split anatomy of a word,
and as one examines its remains,
its organs are seen to be strewn across the palette,
to be clearly observed without further need for dissection.

All the intent and implications conveyed by these broken words,
that once formed a now-broken promise,
can be seen drifting into the abyss,
now freed from the bonds of their
assimilation into a single impression.

And so, truly a promise may be made of words,
but the represented intimations and notions
can only be held together by its upholding.

For in a broken promise, lies a string of broken words,
from which can be seen the now-mortal concepts,
ill-fit to comprehend the world in which they have been thrust,
suffocating from lack of enclosure.

So in a broken promise, is a writhing sentiment,
sentenced to discreditation
by an ultimately insufficient reliance
on the receiver, by the sender.
